Artists Judy and Hannah Bould live in Bickerton Road
What brought you to Archway?
Judy: we came here 30 years ago because it was a place where you could find still find real family houses and with an interesting mixture of people around. Our children, including Hannah, were born here and went to Acland Burleigh school. We still enjoy the fact that there's a sense of community here and we recognise people who have been here all the time we've lived here.
Which media do you work in?
Judy: Photography and painting. I'm jealous of Hannah because she makes things!
Hannah: Although I work in a print studio – I have been developing as a potter over last few years. I started my training locally with a foundation course at Byam Shaw, then went to Camberwell to study illustration. Recently, however, I've made a deliberate change of direction, concentrating on ceramics.
Do you work from home?
Judy: I have my own etching press here and other artists use it. We both give classes in the house (there's a teaching studio upstairs where we offer children mainly after-school classes). We believe in making creativity fun by learning to play with different forms - clay, weaving, mosaic and so on. They gain confidence and I actually learn a lot from them. And I'd worked on some collaborative projects with children, for example the mosaic sign outside Hargrave Park school.
That's a very striking collage on the wall
Judy: That's the result of a long project that I worked on. I photographed the same tree on Hampstead Heath, twelve images at a time, once a week for a year. If you look at it you will see some images taken in the snow, spring, when there were high winds (I became very worried about 'my' tree that week); overall there are four hundred photos, everything from bare twigs to full leaf. It's a copper beech - I still go and say hello from time to time.
Tell us something we may not know about Archway.
Hannah: we have a fully working pottery studio in the garden. I have my kiln and the wheel there; it's where I've taught myself to become a potter.
Judy and Hannah offer classes for children 6 - 12, after school and on Saturday mornings. Details from 07931521472
