Father Christmas was the surprise guest in Archway Mall on Friday 21st November, for an afternoon of Christmas entertainment to celebrate the switching on of the Archway lights. It might have been cold and wet but carols and Christmas songs from St John's, St Joseph's and Hargrave Park schools plus the Islington Council Choir made everyone feel warm.
As well as the song stage and Santa's Grotto in the open air, the FADS hub hosted free face painting, ballon magic, refreshments from local businesses and a make your own Christmas decoration, organised by Archway library. There was also a chance to sign up for an Archway Card in time for a special 20% discount that evening. (That offer's over now but there are still many other offers available - see the front page of this website for details.)
As darkness fell the winner of the best Christmas window was announced. Congratulations to Aija Ustinova of Fresh Flower Scent, and to the runners up, Map Giftshop. Aija received the winner's cheque from the Mayor of Islington, Cllr Teresa Debono, and David Wilson of the Archway Town Centre Group.
Then came the main event: the Mayor switched on Archway's Christmas lights, helped by the winner of this year's poster design competition, Anisha Islam from St. John's Primary School.
It was a great start to Christmas!
